Bordeaux and its wine festivals

Six festivals, six dates: 1895 - 1909 - 1934 - 1971 - 1998 - 2018. In Bordeaux, wine has (almost) always been celebrated...

Wine has not always been celebrated in Bordeaux through Bordeaux Fête le Vin. There is a long history of popular, festive events. In June 1909, on the eve of the Harvest Festival, the municipal council set the tone, declaring: "Today, in an age of democracy, we should no longer be able to say that wine is a “nectar shared only by the Gods"; wine should become the property of all […]".

From fairs in the Place des Quinconces (such as the famous Fair of 1895) to the Fête du Vin in 2018, the exhibition at Bordeaux Metropole’s Archives presents celebrations of wine that have taken place in the city from the end of the 19th century. Documents, texts, posters, photographs, and films invite visitors to travel back in time and explore the history of these festivities that the inhabitants of Bordeaux hold so dear.
