Destination Saintes and Saintonge
In the heart of the Saintonge, Saintes was the ancient capital of Gallic Aquitaine, and proudly preserves the vestiges of its 2,000 year history.
This region boasts several jewels from the Romanesque period, from the simple village churches to the Abbaye aux Dames and Saint-Eutrope, which welcomed pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Its history can also be enjoyed in a fun, educational setting at the Musicaventure and Paléosite. The meandering Charente offers the pleasures of a relaxing river cruise and bike rides. Bathed in ocean light, Saintonge is a cognac producing region, and home of the famous aperitif, Pineau des Charentes. Saintes and Saintonge are one hour from Bordeaux.
